1. Partnership

Storm partnership — a global outdoor heatmap from human movement data

OpenData.Earth has entered a new and ongoing partnership with Storm, the European market-leading outdoors-focused geospatial software platform.

Under the partnership, Storm will use OpenData.Earth’s human movement dataset to generate a global outdoor heatmap — showing where people are present and active across the planet’s landscapes, day by day.

The heatmap will be made available to Storm’s users alongside the company’s existing terrain and route-planning tools.

  2. Launch

    OpenData.Earth launches

OpenData.Earth was founded in February 2026, headquartered in Switzerland.

The catalogue’s mission is to make the geospatial layers required to answer planet-scale questions — climate, biodiversity, land use, water, migration — freely available to anyone, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.

The initial release covers land cover, elevation, administrative boundaries, climate variables, biodiversity records and human movement. New datasets are added on a rolling basis.
